A house is a structure or a building functioning as a place of residence for people i.e. a home. It usually ranges from dwellings that are basic and simple like huts made from mud or branches, shacks that have been creatively fashioned from available urban materials, to solid buildings that are competently erected from concrete, brick, and wood, and have been embedded with various mechanisms and items that make them conducive for dwelling. A modern house is not only composed of the components that help keep its structure intact, there are also added features that must be present before the house can be deemed habitable. Elements like electricity, plumbing, air regulation are essential to the habitable status of a building.


The roof of a house is perhaps its most important element, because it is responsible for protecting the residents of the house from bad and hazardous weather conditions. In ancient houses like mud huts and stick huts, mud or branches are merged together and placed above the structure to protect the inhabitants from various climatic conditions. In modern settlements, however, there are different roofing systems available and suited for peculiar needs; but they are all able to prevent products of precipitation and solar emissions from entering the inner areas of the houses.

This is a specified space (room) within a house that is mostly utilized for the purpose of sleeping. It harbours a tool that is used to facilitate the act of sleeping — a bed. In a typical house, there may be more than one bedroom depending on the number of inhabitants in the house and the size of the dwelling space.


This is the room within the house where activities associated with personal hygiene are carried out. It is a major end point of the house’s plumbing network because of the need to get rid of waste water created in it. A toilet may or may not be embedded in the bathroom depending on the preference of the house’s inhabitants. Just like the bedroom, a house may have one or more bathrooms to satisfy the needs of its residents.


Also referred to as a cooking area, it is the part of the house used for the purpose of cooking and the preparation of food. It is a minor end point of a house’s plumbing network, and also harbours quite a lot of tools and equipments that facilitate the preparation, serving, and storage of food. Most houses usually have one kitchen to satisfy the need of the residents, its size may, however, be larger based on the number of inhabitants.

Living Room

Also called a sitting room, it is an area within the dwelling space of a house that is utilized for socializing and relaxing. Most often, it is usually the first area entered when one passes through the front door of the house. It harbours quite a lot of items that bring comfort to inhabitants and guests. Furniture, television, stereo, etc., are some of the items that are usually found in it. It may also contain a dining area for the consumption of food, though that may also be in the kitchen or in a space of its own.

Big modern houses are known to have many more elements that help in raising the comfort of the houses’ residents. Additional tools like a swimming pool, garage, and a basketball court etc., not only improve the aesthetic of the house, but also help to increase the status of the building.


The construction process of a house begins with the conceptualization of the structure intended to be built. This is carried out by an architect, who not only designs the layout of the house but also defines the purpose of each room in the layout. Construction of the house is carried out by building personnel that either belong to the employ of the construction firm, or are contracted for the job by the firm.
